SourceForge implements OpenID

Filed under: Internet, News, Linux, Open Source, web 2.0

SourceForge OpenID

It’s official - SourceForge.net has joined the OpenID bandwagon. SourceForge, the world’s largest open source software development website, is a little late to the party but nonetheless, it’s nice to see a leader of the open source community adopting OpenID and walking the walk.

OpenID is an open source, decentralized, digital identity user system which allows users to have one identity across the internet and alleviates the hassle of having multiple user names and passwords to log-in to different sites.

OpenID is gaining traction with big companies such as AOL, Sun, Microsoft, and Novell who are accepting and providing OpenIDs. Today it is estimated that there are over 160-million OpenID enabled URIs with nearly ten-thousand sites supporting OpenID logins.

Thanks FF!

Microsoft Appoints New Anti-Antitrust Point Man

Even before the new record fine, the software giant revealed a new found commitment to …

OLPC Sugar OS takes on a life of its own, will anybody care? (DownloadExaminer.com)

OLPC Sugar OS takes on a life of its own, will anybody care?

Filed under: OS Updates, News, Windows, Linux, Open Source

sugar osThe OLPC team yesterday announced plans to load Windows XP on XO Laptops in a handful of countries in June as part of a limited trial. By September, Windows could be available to any developing nation placing orders for XO Laptops. And today, Walter Bender, the former president of software for the OLPC Foundation says the unique software interface that was designed for the XO Laptop will live on. Maybe.

Here’s a little background. The XO Laptop was designed to be a cheap laptop that could be distributed in developing nations to help bridge the digital divide. The original plan for the XO was to use Linux as an operating system because it’s cheap, works well on low-powered devices, and because it’s open source anyone could write software for it easily. A unique desktop environment called Sugar was built to make Linux more user-friendly. But many governments have been reluctant to place orders for the laptops because they don’t run Windows, which is the desktop operating system used by most of the rest of the world. So the OLPC Foundation has been working with Microsoft to bring a low cost version of Windows XP to the XO.

But what does that mean for Sugar? Walter Bender says Sugar Labs, a new non-profit will develop new versions of the software. The goal is to continue developing open source software for the XO so that children in developing nations will be exposed to open source applications and ideals as they learn about computing. The question is, if Windows XP is available for just $3 more than Linux, will anybody buy the Linux/Sugar version? Yes, we know that many Download Squad readers would be more interested in the Linux models, but if the goal is to give school-age children in your country computer literacy, wouldn’t you want them to use the same software that most students in countries like the US are using?

Court considers whether its legal to resell software (DownloadExaminer.com)

Court considers whether its legal to resell software

AutoCADWhen you buy a piece of software, you may or may not actually own it. In many instances, software makers insist that what you’re actually paying for isn’t ownership of the application, but a license to use the application. And if that’s all you paid for, then you don’t have the right to resell the software.

But what happens when you buy a software CD secondhand? Can you sell it then? That’s what Tim Vernor, an eBay dealer did. He bought several copies of AutoCAD. But when he went to sell that software on eBay, Autodesk, the makers of the software contacted eBay and requested that the auctions be suspended. Vernor issued a response, and Autodesk never responded, so his sales were reinstated.

After doing this a few times, eBay apparently received one takedown notice too many, because the auction site canceled Vernor’s account. So he took Autodesk to court, claiming that he has every right to sell the software. While formal arguments have yet to be presented, Vernor has already won the first round. A federal judge denied Autodesk’s motion to dismiss the case, which means that it can go forward.

The ins and outs of the case are pretty complex, but the judge has ruled that Autodesk has not yet managed to show that Vernor was bound by the company’s license and prohibited from reselling the software. If Vernor is successful, this case could pave the way for an increase in used software sales on sites like eBay, although it’s likely that the case would only set a precedent in cases that are extraordinarily similar to Vernor’s.

FriendFeed - now offers Rooms

Filed under: News, Blogging, Social Software, web 2.0

Friendfeed rooms

FriendFeed has launched FriendFeed Rooms, a new feature where users can create private or public rooms to discuss various topics and share items with one another. Whatever happens in the room, stays in the room since only room members can see what comments are being shared by one another.

FriendFeed is a social network aggregator (which is growing wildly in popularity) that collects content from over 30 social networking sites and consolidates it to a customized feed.

Some of the rooms that have already been created include Obamamania (note to Hillary and McCain staffs) and a room about the new season of The Bachelorette. Rooms are a cinch to set up - all you do is click on the Rooms tab on your FriendFeed page and name the topic and whether the room will be public or private.

There are several Issues that need to be addressed. How do you find rooms that are public? And what about those name squatters who grab rooms with the names of corporate registered trademarked names? For instance, Thomas Hawk opened Ars Tecnica, Chevron and Exxon rooms just to see what he could register. Will there be a way to transfer room administration?

In any event, rooms looks like it’s going to be a hit with users. Be sure to check in and tell us what your favorite FriendFeed Rooms are.

Web Albums made easy on Windows and Mac (DownloadExaminer.com)

Web Albums made easy on Windows and Mac

JAlbum(Credit: CNET Networks)

Just about anybody with a little computer experience can put a bunch of photos together onscreen and print them out. But what if you want something a bit more exciting? Maybe something that gives you the flexibility to control the layout, add captions, and upload your work to the Web so your friends and family can enjoy it. JAlbum, for both Windows and Mac is one of my long-time favorite programs. JAlbum just got a major upgrade, so if you’re looking for a way to get your photos out to family and friends, it’s definitely worth checking out.

JAlbum

Browse skins using JAlbums instant previews.

(Credit: CNET Networks)

JAlbum helps you make snazzy photo albums from premade templates, giving you a professional-looking album in just a few clicks. What’s great about JAlbum is that everything is customizable, letting you resize thumbnails to fit your desired specs, write captions the way you want them, and set the overall look of the album to fit your photos. You can even add different file types to your albums–such as sound and movie files–to add spice to your project. Did I mention the interface is completely drag-and-drop?

JAlbum

Get more skins and layouts at the JAlbum Web site.

Once you have your album laid out to your specs, JAlbum lets you share your creation in a number of ways. Using the integrated FTP client, you can upload your album to your Web site or you can use the integrated Web server to serve your album from your computer. You can even create an account at the JAlbum Web site to get free hosting for your albums. So all your friends and family will need to do is point their Web browser at the link you send them, and your holiday photos will appear onscreen without the need for extra downloads.

JAlbum

Make quick edits to your images with the new image editor.

(Credit: CNET Networks)

The folks at JAlbum sent a press release today to tell me about the latest version, so I reacquainted myself with this great software and got a look at some of the new features. One welcome addition is the integrated image editor that adds plug-ins for common tasks such as red-eye removal, image cropping, and color adjustment, and they also added a few simple image filters for more drastic effects. There are only a few skins included in this version, but it’s easy to add more using the huge skins section at the JAlbum site. While you’re there, you can also check out other user’s albums for more ideas.

If you’ve been looking for a new way to post your photos, JAlbum is a great choice with an extremely easy-to-use interface and plenty of options to create the perfect album.
