CrossOver

CrossOver is the commercial version of WINE, a tool that allows users to run many Windows applications on Mac or Linux machines. And today, you can download it for free.

You see, earlier this year the CEO of CodeWeavers, the company behind CrossOver issued a challenge to president George W. Bush. If the outgoing president of the US could accomplish one of a handful of goals before leaving office, the company would give away free licenses for all of its software (with a limit of one per license per user). Surprisingly, one of those goals has been met: CodeWeavers CEO Jeremy White recently noted that he was able to fill up his tank with $2.79/gallon gasoline.

In order to claim your reward, just visit the CodeWeavers page today to snag a coupon good for one software license. CodeWeavers makes CrossOver for Mac and Linux, and also has a special CrossOver Games version that brings support for a number of popular Windows video games to those applications. While CrossOver won’t necessarily let you run every Windows app on your platform of choice, it does boast support for some programs that won’t run under the free and open source WINE utility.

CodeWeaver products typically start at $40. So if you think there’s even a chance you might want a free copy, today’s the day to grab one. Or you can wait until George Bush meets one of the other goals that Jeremy White has set for him, including capturing Osama bin Laden, creating jobs, or bringing average home prices back to the level they were at last year.

Google celebrates eight years of toolbar with new IE version (DownloadExaminer.com)

Google celebrates eight years of toolbar with new IE version

If you’ve used a computer in the last decade, no doubt you’ve come face to face with the Google Toolbar. A Dell computer I bought a few years back came with both the toolbar and Google’s desktop search program pre-installed. Also, an obscene amount of software comes with it as an optional add-on in the installation process since Google pays referrers a fat $1 per new user.

Next month, Google’s toolbar turn eight years old and to celebrate, the company has launched a brand-new version for Internet Explorer, which brings it up to speed with last month’s beta release for Firefox users.

Of all of the features, my personal favorite is the updated autofill system. This lets you have separate autofill profiles, which can be changed on the fly. This is useful if you’re planning to use the toolbar at work, since you can keep one set of information for personal use (e.g. usernames, addresses, phone numbers), and another for business. It can also follow you from browser to browser as long as you’re logged in with your Google credentials.

Other big changes include the introduction of gadgets, which users can affix to the top of their browser and summon with a click. It also throws in Web bookmark sync, and the updated sharing button, which lets you send entire pages to friends via SMS or without having to use an e-mail account.

Google’s put together a pretty neat shot of how the toolbar has progressed since its introduction, which I’ve pasted below.

As the years have gone by Google has relied less on words as much as more recognizable icons. (click to enlarge)

Ringdroid: Awesome Android ringtone-maker (DownloadExaminer.com)

Ringdroid: Awesome Android ringtone-maker

One of the most striking things about this early batch of Android apps is how many excellent freebies there are. Ringdroid is yet another sophisticated, intuitive freeware app that will prove a boon to T-Mobile G1-toting ringtone-lovers.

Ringdroid lets you create ringtones from MP3, WAV, and ARM files you load onto your phone through the SD card or that you purchase through the Amazon MP3 store.

Unlike many Android apps that use the Menu keys to store some software functions, most of Ringdroid’s controls are out on the interface and all respond to touch. You can set the start and ending notes by sliding arrows along the timeline, by pressing Start and End to record the point, or by typing in time stamps.

You can zoom in to set more precise marks on the timeline, and can press the Menu key while in zoom mode to reset to the beginning. When you’re ready to save, you’ll choose from the drop-down menu to create a ringtone, alarm, notification, or edited tune.

Ringdroid is also equipped with a Record button on the app interface, letting you lay down your own sounds from scratch.

Ringdroid is missing the ability to fade in and out, loop, and equalize song selections (read more here), but its ease of use and flexibility in saving audio snippets as more than just ringtones make it an instant must-have app.
